Rectangular Rubber Grommets for Panel Cutouts

Category: Custom Rubber Parts

Rectangular rubber grommets are molded to fit square and rectangular panel openings where a standard round grommet will not work. Specify the cutout length and width, corner radius, panel thickness, groove dimensions, and the size of the cable or component passing through the opening.

Key Features

Why Rectangular Cutouts Need a Dedicated Grommet

Round grommets do not seat correctly in square or rectangular cutouts. The molded profile must match the opening length and width, corner radius, panel thickness, and groove so the part sits securely around the panel edge.

  • Rectangular / Square Cutout Fit

Molded to the finished length and width of a rectangular or square panel opening rather than a standard round hole.

  • Corner Fit

The molded corner radius must follow the cutout radius so the grommet seats evenly without lifting or bunching at the corners.

  • Panel Edge Protection

The rubber profile covers exposed sheet-metal or plastic edges and keeps the passing cable, harness, or component away from the cut edge.

  • Groove-to-Panel Match

Panel thickness and groove dimensions are matched so the grommet grips the opening securely after installation.

  • Inside Opening Clearance

The inside opening is sized around the cable, harness, tube, or component that passes through the panel.

  • Drawing-Based Tooling

Tooling can be reviewed from a panel drawing, cutout dimensions, an existing part, or a physical installation sample.

Technical Data

Length, Width, Corner Radius and Groove Dimensions

For quotation and tooling review, define the finished cutout, panel thickness, corner geometry, groove, and required inside clearance. These dimensions control how the grommet fits the panel.

Dimensions to Confirm

  • Cutout Length (L)

Measure the finished length of the panel opening. Tooling is based on the actual cutout rather than a nominal size alone.

Opening Length Finished Cutout Tooling Input
  • Cutout Width (W)

Confirm the finished width of the rectangular or square opening at the same reference points used for the length.

Opening Width Panel Cutout Fit Control
  • Corner Radius (R)

Specify the inside corner radius of the cutout. A radius mismatch can prevent the grommet from seating cleanly at each corner.

Corner Geometry Radius Match Corner Seating
  • Panel Thickness (T)

Provide the actual panel thickness, including coating where it affects fit. This dimension is used to set the retaining groove.

    Panel Gauge Groove Fit Retention
  • Groove Width

Groove width is matched to the panel edge so the grommet can be installed without excessive looseness or compression.

Panel Grip Width Match Installation Fit
  • Groove Depth

Groove depth affects how far the panel edge sits into the rubber profile and how securely the part is retained.

    Retention Groove Geometry Section Design
  • Inside Opening

Define the clear inside opening required after installation, including clearance for the cable, harness, tube, or inserted component.

    Clearance Pass-Through Inner Profile
  • Lip / Wall Thickness

Outer lip and wall thickness are set around the available panel space, required edge coverage, and molding limits.

Edge Coverage Wall Section Profile Thickness
  • Pass-Through Size

Provide the outside dimensions of the cable bundle or component passing through the opening so the inner profile can be checked for clearance.

Drawing Review Before Tooling

Send a panel drawing or sample with the cutout length and width, corner radius, panel thickness, and the item passing through the opening. We use these inputs to check groove fit and corner seating before tooling.

Where It's Used

Rectangular Grommet Installation Examples

Typical installations use a square or rectangular cutout in a cabinet, housing, or pass-through panel. The opening geometry and panel thickness should be confirmed before the grommet profile is released for tooling.

  • Industrial equipment component inspection

    Control Cabinet Cutouts

For rectangular cable or component openings cut into sheet-metal electrical control cabinet panels.

  • Vehicle firewall cable passage

    Harness Pass-Through Panels

For wire bundles or harnesses routed through square or rectangular panel openings with defined corner radii.

  • Electrical equipment service tools

    Equipment Housings

For non-round openings in machine, instrument, or equipment housings where the groove must match a known panel thickness.

  • Protected cable joint in vehicle assembly

    Sheet-Metal Enclosures

For fabricated enclosures with rectangular cutouts where exposed metal edges must be covered around the pass-through.

  • Square Component Openings

For square panel openings around connectors, sensors, or inserted components that need a molded edge profile.

OEM & Custom

Drawing Review, Tooling and Fit Inspection

Before tooling, we review the panel cutout and grommet cross-section together. First samples are checked against the specified opening, corner radius, panel thickness, groove engagement, and inside clearance.

Rubber sealing ring samples
  • Drawing Review

Provide the panel drawing, cutout dimensions, grommet drawing, or an existing sample so the mating geometry can be compared before tooling.

  • Corner and Groove Check

We check the corner radius, groove width and depth, lip geometry, and inside opening against the panel and pass-through dimensions.

  • Compound Selection

EPDM, NBR, silicone, FKM, and neoprene can be selected according to temperature, oil, weather, chemical, and flexibility requirements.

  • First-Sample Fit Inspection

First samples can be checked for corner seating, groove engagement, panel retention, and clearance around the cable, harness, or inserted component.
