How to Find the Right Rubber Sealing Product

Selecting a rubber component involves more than matching its dimensions. Engineers and procurement teams should confirm how the part will operate, what it will contact and which quality requirements apply before choosing a profile or compound.

  • Is the Application Static or Dynamic?

    Static seals are used between fixed surfaces, while dynamic seals must withstand rotary or reciprocating movement. This affects the seal profile, material hardness, groove design and lubrication requirements.

  • What Media Will Contact the Seal?

    Identify the oils, water, fuels, gases, chemicals or cleaning agents that may contact the part. NBR, EPDM and FKM each provide different levels of resistance, so material compatibility should be confirmed for the actual application.

  • What Are the Operating Conditions?

    Temperature, pressure, movement, compression, outdoor exposure and required service life all influence the choice of material, hardness, tolerance and seal geometry.

  • Is a Standard or Custom Part Required?

    Standard profiles may reduce tooling costs and sample time, while custom molded parts are better suited to special dimensions, complex shapes or application-specific performance requirements.

Material selection should be based on the complete operating environment rather than a single property.

Material Options
NBR A cost-effective material with good resistance to many petroleum-based oils and hydraulic fluids. Commonly used for general industrial O-rings, oil seals and hydraulic components.
FKM Selected for higher temperatures and strong resistance to many oils, fuels and chemicals. Frequently used in automotive, chemical-processing and energy-related applications.
EPDM Offers good resistance to water, steam, ozone and outdoor weathering. Common applications include water systems, HVAC equipment, outdoor machinery and weather-exposed seals.
Silicone Provides flexibility across a broad temperature range and is available in compounds suited to cleanliness-sensitive applications. Often used for medical equipment, food-processing equipment, electronics and soft molded components.
HNBR Provides improved heat, oil, wear and mechanical resistance compared with conventional NBR. It is commonly considered for demanding automotive systems, compressors, oilfield equipment and industrial machinery.
